Diagnodent Laser Aided Caries Detection

The DIAGNOdent Laser is the latest in cavity detection. This instrument is much more accurate and reliable than traditional methods. In the past, a dental instrument was used , the limitation of which was the inability to detect a cavity which was below a groove or fissure that was narrower than the tip of the probing instrument being used.

This problem is rectified by the DIAGNOdent Laser. First, the laser takes a reading of a healthy surface of enamel on your teeth. This reading is then used as a baseline.(A specific emission of light is reflected by the laser when it encounters a healthy area of the teeth). Next, we scan the suspicious areas of your teeth. If the laser detects an area that differs from the baseline reading,( the laser reflects a fluorescent light on a wavelength different from the baseline reading) it alerts us to a potential problem area. This method allows us to detect hidden areas of decay that previously would escape discovery.
